The lovely chateau at Saumur on the Loire  (45 mins drive). Visit the wine producers and the military riding school while you are here.

Beachs, restaurants, night market and harbour of St Gilles croix de vie. A great day out (90 mins).

Troglydite dwellings at Rochmeniere. (40 mins)

A great zoo at Doue la Fontaine. Great day out for animal lovers. (40 mins).

Cable water skiing at Moncontour.  Swimming lake with water sports and fishing.  Take a picnic for a great day out. (30 mins).

The beautiful 12th century abbey at Fontevraux near Chinon which contains the tombs of the Plantagentate kings and queens including that of Richard the Lion Heart.  (45 mins).

Pierre et Lumiere, St Hilaire St Florent.  Carved into the tuffeau stone in the underground tunnels that surround Saumur, this fantastic display of the famous Loire Chateaux is a must see visit.  The site is in the same road as the wine producing houses (all open for tours, tastings and direct purchases) who also utilise the passage ways which were created when mining the beautiful white stone for many of the Loire Chateaux. (45 mins).

Parc de la vallee is a theme park set in 12 hectares of land providing family entertainment.  Massais (60 mins),

Puy du Fou - Le Grand Parc  Theme park plus evening Cinescene.  One of France's top attactions (45 mins drive).

Medieval market town of Parthenay. Wednesday market (15 mins).

Historic town of Thouars. Fantastic market every Friday (20 mins).

Mouton village. Twenty varieties of sheep from around the world.

The lovely chateau at Usse, near Chinon.  The inspiration for "The Sleeping Beauty story".  The chateau has a number of static displays depicting this romantic story. (60 minutes).

Pescalis, This 150 hectare purpose built fishing and nature centre, offers everything for the fisherman and nature lover.  Separate lakes specifically stocked to match your fishing preferences i.e. Carp, Course, Predatory (including Pike and catfish). (30 mins)

Cycle trail of the Vallee du Thouet a 145 km route specifically for cyclists. 

Le Thouet a Velo is marked by 450 special signposts, and scenery varies from the flat plains of the north round Thouars to the wooded valleys and rolling hillsides of St Loup sur Thouet with its pretty Chateau du St Loup and Parthenay with its mediaeval quarter.

La Vallee des Singes - (Monkey Park).  All varieties of monkey in a natural environment.  Walk amongst them.  Watch the larger apes ie chimps and gorillas being fed.(90mins).  

Parc du Futurscope - Poitiers, High tech futuristic park - Remains France's number one visitor attraction (45 mins drive).

Medieval market town of Airvault.  Underground caverns, museum, 11th Century church, Saturday morning market. (5-10 mins). Musee des blindes - Europe's largest tank and armour museum based in Saumur (45 mins).

Marais Poitevin - (Colloquially known as Venis Vert the Green Venice) Network of canals with boat hire (with or without a guide) 45 mins.

The oriental gardens at Maulevrier. Acres of spectacular garden displays from Japan. (30 mins).


Les Musicales du Cadre Noir de Saumur. Spectacular shows which mix equestrian grace & beauty with classical music and stunning lights. (45 mins).


The lovely chateau at Breze. A chateau built on another.  Visit the grounds, explore the chateau and the village in the caves below.  The chateau is surrounded by its own vines, visitors can taste and buy wine direct at the chateau.  A fantastic family day out. (45 mins).


At Loudun there is a great karting circuit of over 1100m set in the woods.  The club has 50 karts available and has full club house facilities.  (50 mins).
